If you’re searching for the perfect road trip, look no further than Norway. This beautiful country in Northern Europe offers an array of breathtaking landscapes, cozy accommodations, and unforgettable experiences for couples seeking both adventure and tranquility. We recently started on an incredible road trip from the south in Oslo, journeying west to the national parks and the Atlantic coast, and then heading north to the enchanting Lofoten Islands.
And, we tried something crazy for our Norway road trip – we did this 4500 kilometer journey all with an electric car, but more on that later.
Imagine waking up to the serene beauty of Norway’s fjords, with their deep blue waters surrounded by snowy mountains and lush greenery. Norway’s fjords are perhaps its most iconic feature, providing a stunning backdrop for romantic adventures. For those who love the idea of discovering hidden gems, the Lofoten Islands are a dream come true. This archipelago, known for its dramatic peaks, sheltered bays, and fishing villages, felt like a world away from the ordinary.
Our Norway road trip proved that this trip is a paradise for couples seeking both adventure and relaxation. Exploring Norway’s Vibrant Cities: Oslo, Trondheim, and Molde
As part of our incredible road trip through Norway, we had the pleasure of exploring some of the country’s most bueatiful cities: Oslo, Trondheim and Molde.
Oslo: The Heart of Norway
Our adventure began in Oslo, Norway’s capital. This city perfectly blends modernity with history, providing a fascinating start to our trip. The locals are also really friendly. Make sure that you don’t miss Vigeland Park and the Viking Ship Museum. Next, head to Aker Brygge, a waterfront district filled with cafes and stylish restaurants. Enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk with stunning views, especially in the evenings.
The fact that there is literally nowhere to park your car in the city center is a drawback if you are planning a road trip. Our recommendation: Park in the areas where parking is allowed or at the hotels own parking garage and use public transportation to explore the city.
Molde: The City of Roses
After exploring the western part of Norway and one of the biggest glaciers in Europe, our journey took us to Molde, a picturesque coastal town known as the City of Roses, offering a relaxing atmosphere.
Enjoy the Molde Panorama: Molde is famous for its panoramic view of 222 mountain peaks. We drove up to the Varden viewpoint and were rewarded with a spectacular sight of the mountains.
Trondheim: A Historical Gem
From Molde we continued our journey towards the western coast and the famous Atlantic Ocean Road. After that we drove to Trondheim, a city known for its vibrant student population and rich historical sites.
Nidaros Cathedral: This magnificent Gothic cathedral is the northernmost of its kind in the world. Also make sure you don’t miss ‚Bakklandet‘ when you are in Trondheim. This historic district is full of traditional wooden buildings. We spent an afternoon exploring its cafes, boutiques, and the Old Town Bridge, which offered a perfect view of the river and city.

Explore Norway’s National Parks and Scenic Drives
For couples who love nature and adventure, Norway’s national parks provide the perfect environment for a romantic getaway. Among the most stunning are Jotunheimen National Park and Nigardsbreen National Park, each offering unique landscapes and unforgettable experiences. Here are some of the best activities for couples to enjoy in these breathtaking natural wonders.
Jotunheimen National Park: A Hiker’s Paradise
Jotunheimen National Park is home to some of the highest peaks in Northern Europe, making it a paradise for hiking enthusiasts. There are countless chances for exploration and adventure thanks to the park’s striking mountains, lush valleys, and crystal-clear lakes.
Nigardsbreen Glacier: A Season-by-Season Natural Wonder
Welcome to the Nigardsbreen Glacier in Jostedalsbreen National Park, one of Norway’s most breathtaking natural wonders.
Seasonal Differences: Nigardsbreen Glacier offers something unique in every season. In spring, as temperatures rise, the surrounding valleys turn green, making it an ideal time for hiking. By May, the first guided glacier tours often start. Summer is the peak season, with mild temperatures and easy access to the glacier, perfect for guided hikes and a boat ride on the lake. Autumn brings a tranquil atmosphere with fewer crowds and stunning fall foliage. The glacier remains accessible until late October.
Nigardsbreen Glacier is located in the Jostedalen Valley, approximately 300 kilometers from Bergen. The most convenient way to reach the glacier is by car.
To walk on the glacier itself, you must join a guided tour. These tours provide the necessary equipment and expertise to safely navigate the glacier. We advise signing up for the guided tours as soon as possible. The lake was still frozen when we visited the Nigardsbreen Glacier in May, so there was no boat ride available to the glacier. So we decided to start hiking. Our 1.5-hour hike to the glacier took us along paths covered in ice and snow. The hike was both challenging and rewarding, offering incredible views of the glacier and its surroundings. The return hike took another 1.5 hours, making it a total of 3 hours.
We highly recommend packing good hiking shoes, as the trail can be slippery and uneven due to the lingering snow and ice. Proper footwear will ensure a safer and more comfortable experience as you navigate the beautiful yet rugged terrain.
Scenic Drives in Norway: The Atlantic Road, Trollstigen, and Sognefjellet
Norway is known for its stunning scenic drives. In this chapter, we’ll explore three of the most famous routes: the Atlantic Road, Trollstigen, and Sognefjellet.
The Atlantic Road
The Atlantic Road (Atlanterhavsveien) is one of Norway’s most spectacular and interesting scenic drives, stretching 8.3 kilometers across a series of islands and islets connected by eight bridges. This road offers dramatic ocean views and a sense of adventure as you drive right over the waves. Trollstigen: The Troll’s Path
Trollstigen, also known as the Troll’s Path, is a serpentine mountain road. This road offers awe-inspiring views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. However, it’s essential to note that Trollstigen is subject to seasonal closures due to snow and ice.
Our Experience: We visited Trollstigen in early May, only to find that it was still closed. It’s crucial to check the road conditions and opening dates before planning your trip. We were still able to capture some stunning images and videos of the valley, though.
Sognefjellet: The Roof of Norway
The highest mountain pass in Northern Europe, the Sognefjellet, rises to a height of 1,434 meters, or roughly 4704 feet, above sea level. This route offers stunning views of glaciers, mountains, and alpine landscapes. Driving this scenic road requires careful planning, especially if you are using an electric vehicle.
Sognefjellet usually opens at the beginning of May and was the most interesting route we explored. However, in case you opt for an EV, it’s crucial to fully charge your vehicle before ascending, as there are no charging stations at the top. Your electric vehicle will use more energy when you drive up the mountains. You can see how high the snow was at that time in the image on the right-hand side.
Seasonal Considerations
When planning to drive these scenic routes, always check for seasonal restrictions. High-altitude roads like Trollstigen and Sognefjellet can be closed due to snow, typically from late autumn to late spring. It’s essential to plan accordingly and verify road conditions before your trip.

The summer months, from June to August, are the most popular times to visit. You will have long, bright days during these months, particularly in the northern regions where you can see the Midnight Sun. This period is perfect for exploring the fjords and hiking in the mountains. During our trip to Norway in May, we didn’t see the full Midnight Sun, which peaks from late May to mid-July. However, the sky remained bright all night, providing us with extended daylight.
From December to February, Norway is transformed into a snow-covered paradise during winter. Who want to see the Northern Lights in places like Tromsø or the Lofoten Islands have the best chance of doing so during this time of year.
Being ready for variable weather conditions is an essential piece of advice for anyone considering a trip to Norway. Particularly in the coastal and mountainous areas of the nation, the weather can be highly variable. Even in summer, temperatures can be cool, and rain showers are common. Packing layers, waterproof clothing, and sturdy footwear will ensure you’re comfortable regardless of the weather.

The electric car performed beautifully, and we had no trouble finding charging stations along the way. Overall, renting an electric car in Norway gave us the flexibility to explore freely and enjoy our journey without worrying about high fuel prices. If you’re planning a Norway road trip, we highly recommend considering an electric car.
